Acoustic Strawbs
Local live music promoters, Movers and Shakers promotions are proud to announce ACOUSTIC STRAWBS.
2009 marked the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Strawbs album on A&M Records.
Acoustic Strawbs are David Cousins, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, the front-line of the classic 1970s line-up of Britain’s most successful international folk-rock band, and who tour regularly as Acoustic Strawbs.
In the early 1970s Strawbs scored chart success in Britain with huge albums such as ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’. From the mid-1970s as the group concentrated their attention on the United States and Canada where their albums, including the classics ‘Hero and Heroine’ and ‘Ghosts’, spent over fifty two weeks on the Billboard charts. Strawbs toured with the likes of Santana, Peter Frampton, The Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Joe Walsh, Blue Oyster Cult, King Crimson, and Frank Zappa.
David Cousins, leader of Strawbs, was awarded BPI platinum discs in recognition of worldwide sales of the albums ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2002, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Rick Wakeman on behalf of the Classic Rock Society.
Rick Wakeman played with the Strawbs for two years before moving on to achieve world-wide success with Yes, and as a solo artist. The much-loved Sandy Denny made an album with the Strawbs before she joined Fairport Convention.
Acoustic Strawbs shows receive rave reviews:
"Carefully selecting their repertoire from less than obvious sources they invest the rarely performed material with considerable energy and thoughtful arrangements." (Record Collector)
"Hearing the brilliant Strawbs [at the Edmonton Folk Festival] was like a tutorial in UK folk music from the past 40 years." (Edmonton Sun)
"Unlike many groups that are past their commercial prime and churn out inferior, dispirited versions of the hits from their glory days, the Acoustic Strawbs stand out as a band that performs their old material with passion and precision. Furthermore, they have broken new ground by harnessing the power of their electric incarnation in an acoustic setting." (Chicago Tribune)

Kinks' Ray Davis for Regent
Despite a very poorly attended visit to the Ipswich Regent Theatre in 2009, The Kinks' frontman Ray Davis is set to return this summer.
Davis is a musical genius now performing solo with a mix of new material and classic hits. Last year's poor performance was an insult to such a music legend. Let's hope that this year's visit is better publicised and more importantly better attended.
Davis is at The Ipswich Regent 11th May...

Come Up and See Steve!
Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel announce a fifteen date tour that takes in all of the Home Nations and Eire in May and June 2010. IPSWICH REGENT 6th JUNE
Tickets went on sale on 27th November 2009. Steve Harley is one of the UK’s most respected songwriters and performers. Whilst his calling card is the million-selling number one single ‘Make Me Smile [Come Up And See Me]’, he also had hits with ‘Mr. Raffles [Man, It Was Mean]’, ‘Judy Teen’, ‘Mr. Soft’ and many more. Harley even scored a hit with an enormously successful cover of The Beatles’ ‘Here Comes The Sun’ but is rightly revered for his own compositions, and he’ll have some new songs to play on this tour. This year at the prestigious Classic Rock Awards, he picked up the ‘Childline Rocks’ Award in front of a room full of his peers.

Louisa Releases Album

Louisa Gaylard is a singer-songwriter from Ipswich. Her songs are about life, love and the people that affect her. Her influences include such artists as Frank Turner, Aretha Franklin and Doves. She loves to perform her songs in front of an audience and to play and sing with passion.
Since the age of 14 she has gigged, both locally and further afield, appearing as a guest artist and arranging her own gigs with her favourite fellow artists. She is a regular on the Suffolk summer music festival scene and in 2009 played sets of new songs with her brother Jim on bass and drums at the Kesgrave Music Festival and Halesworth's Gig In The Park.
Having recorded a debut EP 'Hippy Hill' in 2006 and her first album 'Point?' in 2007 her latest album 'New Day', is released in November, includes 14 songs. The material is all original and mainly features Louisa, her guitar and backing vocals; there are also drums, bass and glockenspiel (played by her brother Jim, a student at Leeds College of Music) and 'cello (played by Belinda Shave) on some of the tracks. The album was sound engineered by Mike Briggs at Mikesound Studios in the village of Henley, near Ipswich this August.
Listening to the new album is a pleasure and I cannot think of a better way to spend 49 minutes. The more I listen the more I'm reminded of Lily Allen (especially on the title track).... now Louisa will either love or hate that comment... however Lily has done pretty well for herself. Therefore I feel her voice and style is very much the sound of "now", let's just hope she gets that same big break!
